Tools time

You can't blame the rusty feel of "Family Tools" (7:30 p.m., KSTP, Ch. 5) on the fact that it's been sitting on ABC's shelf for almost a year. The problem with the show is its formulaic approach to the dysfunctional family sitcom. That said, a cast consisting of J.K. Simmons, Leah Remini and Kyle Bornheimer is worth keeping an eye on.

The ultimate search

If "Zero Dark Thirty" didn't tell you nearly enough about the capture of Osama bin Laden, check out "Manhunt" (7 p.m., HBO), an in-depth documentary that features rarely seen footage of Al-Qaida training and an interview with a key operative.

Master minds

Kal Penn skips a trip to White Castle to host "The Big Brain Theory: Pure Genius" (9 p.m., Discovery), a competition series in which bright minds take on nearly impossible challenges. In light of the Boston Marathon tragedy, let's hope producers switch out the scheduled first episode, which involves bombs strapped to the back of two pickup trucks.
