Powerful Category 5 Hurricane Gilbert struck the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexicoon Sept. 14, 1988. The hurricane caused massive destruction through theCaribbean and into Mexico and resulted in 318 deaths. The barometric pressurein Gilbert reached a low of 888 millibars or 26.22 inches of mercury, which isstill the lowest surface pressure ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere.
