Mural project set to go at Lyric ArtsThe Lyric Arts theater of Anoka will hold its "Making a Scene" mural project Thursday through Sunday. Led by artist Carole Bersin, community members and volunteers will paint a 1,680-square-foot mural on an outside wall of the theater at 420 E. Main St., Anoka.

Painting will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday and at 10 a.m. Saturday. Touch-ups will be done on Sunday.

In addition to the painting, the event will include live music by several bands, food vendors and activities for kids.

There will also be the Anoka farmers market from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday and a rummage sale inside the theater from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Movie-night film is 'Despicable Me'The final Movie in the Park feature -- the 2010 animated comedy "Despicable Me" -- will begin at dusk Friday at Central Park, 8440 Regent Av. The event is free. Sacks and beverages will be available for purchase. For information, call 763-493-8154.

'Tribute trees' available for purchaseFriends of the Parks is sponsoring a program to sell sponsorships of trees to be planted in parks in Brooklyn Park.

Trees can be purchased for $75 each or three for $200. Honorees will receive a card announcing the gift.

Golf film to be shown at city's new clubhouseThe Coon Rapids Park and Rec and sustainability commissions are sponsoring a movie night Thursday featuring "The Legend of Bagger Vance," the 2000 film starring Matt Damon and Will Smith.

The screening will begin at dusk on the patio at Harvest Grill at Bunker Hills Golf Club, 12800 Bunker Prairie Rd. Movie concessions will be provided by the Harvest Grill.

Clear out basement for curbside cleanupResidents who are billed for curbside recycling are eligible to have their unwanted possessions hauled from the curb. The trucks will roll through Crystal from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sept. 17 and 24 and Oct. 1, though they will visit each neighborhood only once.

Citizens Academy taking reservationsThe Crystal and New Hope police departments are sponsoring a Citizens' Police Academy, designed to teach residents about public safety. Classes will be held Sept. 15-Oct. 20, covering topics such as patrol tactics, investigations, narcotics, crime-scene processing, use of force, crime prevention and more.

City rehab program holds open housesThe city of Fridley will hold a series of open houses in August to showcase work done on two city-owned houses, to try to inspire homeowners to tackle their own improvement projects, and to show prospective home buyers how dated houses can be updated.

The houses at 4757 2nd St. and 831 Mississippi St. will be open on Wednesdays in August from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Work on the 2nd Street house was completed July 22. The Mississippi Street house has been completed and sold.

'Live on the Drive' concert set for Aug. 25The group La Gran Charanga will perform Thursday, Aug. 25, at part of the Live on the Drive summer concert series at 34th Avenue N. and Victory Memorial Parkway in Minneapolis. The concert is a rescheduling of one that was postponed because of rain.
