A man running to catch a Metro Transit bus that was pulling away from a curb Tuesday night at the Uptown Transit Center in Minneapolis was struck by the bus' rear wheels and run over, a transit spokesman said.
The 34-year-old man was trying to catch a southbound Route 17 bus that was departing from the south side of the terminal at 2855 Hennepin Avenue S. just after 8 p.m. He was conscious and breathing when he was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with unknown injuries, said spokesman John Siqveland.
The victim's name had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon, but Siqveland believed his injuries were non-life threatening.
In social media campaigns and through advertisements on and inside buses, Metro Transit tells riders that once a bus has started rolling, "Never, ever run after or alongside a moving bus once it has left its stop. Play it safe and wait for the next one."
The bus driver will undergo drug and alcohol testing, which is standard procedure in cases like this, Siqveland said.
The bus was taken out of service.
Metro Transit police are investigating, Siqveland said.
