Penn State QB looks the part
Penn State's true freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg looked like the real deal against Syracuse. His touchdown pass to Eugene Lewis was a thing of beauty, a spiral that went 55 yards in the air. Once Allen Robinson was cleared to play at halftime, he pulled down seven catches for 134 yards and one touchdown.
• Nebraska was the pick here to win the Legends Division, but not anymore after watching what Wyoming did Saturday — with nine rushes of more than 10 yards and eight passes of more than 15 yards.
After countless missed tackles, Coach Bo Pelini said, "I equate it to a basketball game where you miss a lot of layups. We'll be better because of the experience."
• As Michigan State's quarterback carousel continues turning, the Spartans need better wide receiver play, too. The quarterbacks combined to go 17-for-37 for 116 yards in last week's 26-13 victory over Western Michigan, but those totals included six dropped passes. Spartans receivers also dropped nine of 54 passes in the spring game.
• Gophers coach Jerry Kill had this to say about his former team, Northern Illinois, knocking off Iowa 30-27: "I'll be honest; I think Iowa's a better football team than they were a year ago. I think Northern's got a good football team. They've got good players who can make some plays."
