A Surenos 13 gang member who stabbed a rival gang member last summer near Arlington High School in St. Paul was sentenced Friday to more than nine years in prison.

Israel Flores, 19, of St. Paul, pleaded guilty Sept. 1 to first-degree assault.

According to the charges, the incident began June 22 with the victim, an 18th Street gang member, insulting Surenos 13.

The remarks, allegedly made to two female summer-school students, were relayed to another girl, who called Flores to tell him to go fight with the 18th Street member.

Flores soon arrived in a sport-utility vehicle and stabbed the 15-year-old victim several times, the complaint said. The victim has recovered.

Ramsey County District Judge Michael Fetsch sentenced Flores to 110 months. Two-thirds of that time will be served in prison; one third on supervised release. Flores was given credit for the 116 days he has spent in custody. He also was ordered to pay restitution for unreimbursed medical expenses.
