Another superlative project by Minneapolis-based Tim Carl, Northrop's renovation struck the perfect balance between preservation and problem-solving. The hall's finest interior elements were recreated or restored (the ornamental front lobby and the stage's elaborate proscenium arch). Yet the new Northrop vastly improved the art-going experience with comfier seats, improved sightlines, superior acoustics, better perches for people-watching and a big boost in the quantity of public restrooms. 84 Church St. SE., Mpls.; 612-624-2345; northrop.umn.edu
