The heat will extend well north through Utah, Nevada and California. At Salt Lake City, Utah, it will reach 97 Thursday afternoon, Reno is expecting a high of 98, while Sacramento hits 102.

This is the type of pattern that can produce temperatures over 120 degrees in Death Valley. The hottest temperature on record for the United States is 134 degrees which occurred in Death Valley on July 10, 1913.
