Pledges of allegiance

Bombs bursting in air may not be as glorious on the small screen as in the great outdoors — but parking is a lot cheaper. Those looking to celebrate the holiday from their living rooms have a number of options, starting with "A Capitol Fourth" (7 p.m. TPT, Ch. 2) featuring Kenny Loggins, Smokey Robinson and the cast of "On Your Feet!" from the West Lawn of the Capitol. "Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular" (7 p.m. KARE, Ch. 11) vies for a younger crowd with guests Meghan Trainor and 5 Seconds of Summer, while "Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular" (8 p.m. WCCO, Ch. 4) tries to have it both ways, putting the endurable orchestra on the same bill as Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas.

War story

The genius of Brian DePalma is well on display in "DePalma," a new movie currently playing in town, but you can also appreciate his talents by catching 1989's "Casualties of War," a taut morality play that sets Sean Penn against Michael J. Fox in the jungles of Vietnam. It's just one of the director's underrated contributions to cinema.

London calling

TV detectives based in London are a pound a dozen these days, but we're intrigued by "Marcella," if only because it stars former "Pushing Daisies" standout Anna Friel and it's the first English-speaking series created by Hans Rosenfeldt, who is also responsible for the original Swedish version of "The Bridge."
