Wisconsin-Whitewater scored six runs in the eighth inning — two coming on a bases-loaded single by Minneapolis Southwest's Nick Kuhlmann — and beat St. Thomas 10-4 in the Division III World Series on Sunday in Appleton, Wis.
The Tommies fell to the losers' bracket; they will play the Southern Maine-Emory winner at 3:30 p.m. Monday. The winner will face Whitewater on Tuesday, needing to win twice to capture the championship.
Division II Series
Minnesota State Mankato failed to overcome a three-run first-inning deficit and lost 4-2 to Seton Hill in Cary, N.C. Parker Sullivan had an RBI triple for Mankato, and senior Jason Hoppe worked eight innings and set a Mavericks single-season record with 97⅔ innings pitched.
The Mavericks (45-10) stranded 11 runners.
UST softball team ousted in Series
St. Thomas' run in the Division III World Series ended with a 3-2, nine-inning loss to Salisbury (Md.) in Tyler, Texas.
Kim Dorsey singled in the go-ahead run for the Sea Gulls (43-3) in the top of the ninth. St. Thomas finished 44-9.
Saints win
The St. Paul Saints held Sioux Falls scoreless over the final six innings and won 3-2 at Midway Stadium.
