Authorities Wednesday identified the deputy who shot and wounded a man who fled St. Cloud police earlier this week after they responded to a domestic assault call.
Stearns County Sgt. Nathan Stewart, a 14-year officer with the Sheriff's Office, and four St. Cloud police officers, who haven't yet been named, are on standard administrative leave as the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) investigates the incident.
Just before midnight on Monday, Stewart and several St. Cloud police officers arrived at a home in the 7000 block of Northwood Lane in St. Cloud to investigate a possible domestic assault when a 37-year-old man from Willmar broke out a window of the one-story home and fled, carrying a handgun, the BCA said.
The man, whom the Star Tribune is not naming because he has not been charged, had been staying at the home and is a suspect in the domestic assault.
According to the BCA, the man fired several shots and ran before Stewart fired his weapon, striking the suspect twice in the leg.
Two police officers also used Tasers and deployed a K-9 to apprehend the man as he struggled with the officers, the BCA said.
The suspect was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital with noncritical injuries.
St. Cloud police and the Stearns County deputies don't use body cameras, and the BCA said squad cameras didn't capture any video of the incident.
