Senior Joe Molenaar and junior Jack Bayless each scored twice, and junior goaltender Charlie Glockner had several clutch stops among his 21 saves as Minnetonka beat Edina 5-3 Saturday in a matchup of the state's top-ranked Class 2A boys' hockey teams at Pagel Activity Center in Minnetonka.
Bayless scored 2 minutes, 57 seconds into the third period to put the Class 2A, No. 2 Skippers ahead 2-1. Molenaar added a goal 11 seconds later. Luke Loheit completed the three-goal flurry in a span of 2:20 to put the Skippers up 4-1.
Jett Jungels got the Hornets to within a goal with 13 seconds left, but Molenaar scored an empty-netter moments later.
Bayless started the scoring for the Skippers 10:35 in. Sammy Walker tied the game for the Hornets with two seconds left in the opening frame.
Eastview 2, Lakeville South 1: Zach Anderson broke a 1-1 tie 2:46 into the third period to lead the Class 2A, No. 14 Lightning past the visiting Cougars.
Wayzata 9, Hopkins 2: Griffin Ness had a hat trick and an assist to lead the Trojans in a victory over the Royals. Tristan Nelko added two goals.
Girls' hockey
Andover 3, Elk River/Zimmerman 2: Cassidy Stumo stopped 26 shots to help Class 2A, Section 7 top-seeded Huskies survive. Peyton Hemp scored two goals and Gabrielle Krause had one for Andover. Madison Bizal and Halle Johnson scored for Elk River/Zimmerman.
Cretin-Derham Hall 3, Hopkins/St. Louis Park 2: Emily King scored back-to-back goals in the third period for the Raiders in the Section 6AA playoffs. Cece Ziegler also scored for Cretin-Derham Hall. Mary Gleason and Kylie Hanley scored in the first period for the Royals.
Eastview 1, Apple Valley 0: The No. 6-seeded Lightning upset the No. 2 Eagles after Amelia Julian made 28 saves. Natalie Bordson scored a second-period goal.
Farmington 6, Lakeville North 0: Emily Auge made 27 saves and Claire Enright recorded a hat trick, her second on the season for the Tigers.
Boys' basketball
St. Paul Johnson 70, Centennial 68: The Governors overcame a 12-point halftime deficit vs. the visiting Cougars.
