Red-throated Loons, arctic nesters, can be seen on Lake Superior during their fall migration. Birders consider such a sighting an event, because this is not a species commonly seen here. One is good, two is better, more is better yet. So, how about today's report from New Jersey. A birder conducting a seawatch in Cape May County, counting migrants, recorded more than 16,500 Red-throated Loons today. It was a spectacle, with hundreds of loons often in sight at the same time. Hourly counts never were less than 2,000 birds. The information comes from the email network BirdChat, as posted by a man named Tony Leukering.
