Home, sweet home on the prairie

Ever since the first plaintive notes of its theme song emanated from TV sets 40 years ago, NBC's "Little House on the Prairie" has occupied a special place in the hearts of viewers of a certain age. They're in for a treat now that the Emmy-winning family drama — based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's tales of growing up in Walnut Grove, Minn. — has been given a high-def restoration for home video. Season 1, including 24 uncut episodes and the original pilot movie, just came out on Blu-ray (Lionsgate, $39). Since the series was shot on film, the prairie has never looked more stunning. Extras include the first installment of a six-part making-of documentary. Season 2 has already been announced for May 6.
