Flash flood alerts are in effect for the mountainous regions of the West. What makes this situation dangerous is that it's not raining anywhere, and theweather is ideal for camping and hiking.

The problem hinges on the current exceptional warmth which is causing rapidsnowmelt. All this water is cascading down the mountains turning small streamsinto raging currents. Even more dangerous are the mountainside dry ravines thatcan suddenly fill up with quickly flowing water.

The rapid snowmelt and potential for flash flooding will continue in themountain West through Thursday.
