Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area is a group of 34 islands off the coast of Boston. Many are available by ferry, and some offer camping and activities. The largest is Georges Island (1-617-223-8666; www.boston harborislands.org).

Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum is a new, interactive museum that interprets the events surrounding the Boston Tea Party and the start of the American Revolution. Visits run via scheduled tours; reservations are recommended (1-617-338-1773; www.bostonteapartyship.com).

New England Aquarium features more than 70 exhibits, including a shark and ray touch tank; whale watches are also available through the aquarium (1-617-973-5200; www .neaq.org).

Summer on the Waterfront runs through Labor Day and includes festivals and attractions from the Charlestown Navy Yard to the South Boston Waterfront (summeronthewaterfront.org).

The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston opened its new building in late 2006 and features works from dozens of artists from around the world (1-617-478-3100; www.icaboston.org).
