This Blanding's Turtle, showing its characteristic bright yellow chin and throat, was seen in mid-August in the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area just north of Grantsburg in Burnett County, Wis. The species is found broadly throughout Minnesota in appropriate habitat, with the exception of the far western and northeastern parts of the state. Preferred habitat for Blanding's Turtle is wetland complexes with adjacent sandy uplands. The species is listed as threatened in Minnesota. Adults range from six to 10 inches long, with a highly domed upper shell (carapace).
