What makes people hopeful?

The answer, it turns out, is similar around the world. Hope expert Shane Lopez cites the top three factors that give us hope no matter where we live, according to Gallup research:

A good job. People feel hopeful, Lopez said, when they've landed a fulfilling job.

A happy family. "Everybody is invested in their family," Lopez said.

A sense of well-being. This comes from finding "a meaningful way to spend time, and people to spend it with."

Not surprisingly, people lose hope when they don't have these things. "Loneliness is really something affecting more and more people nowadays," Lopez said. "That is one thing that undermines hope."
