Fast, lean and mean. The creative minds at Chevrolet introduced a special version of the popular Silverado pickup truck in 2006 called the Silverado SS - which also has several versions, including the SS Dale Earnhardt Intimidator Edition, pictured. Based on the half-ton Silverado1500 extended cab/standard cargo box body style, the SS was available in two- or four-wheel-drive configurations for 2006.

The addition of a traditional rear-wheel drive train option offered customers increased towing capacity while broadening SS performance choices at a great value.

The Silverado SS was powered by a high-output version of GM's Vortec 6000 V-8 and was bolted to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L85-E four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. The gearbox was equipped with a 3.06 first gear and a 0.70 final gear, which transferred power to a 4.10 geared locking rear axle for rapid acceleration and relaxed highway cruising.

The quick Chevrolet pickup also received the exterior freshening that was applied across the entire Silverado Series 1500/2500 lineup. A new front-end appearance included an updated grille design and a new, power dome hood. The lower, aggressive stance of the Silverado SS coupled with meaty 20-inch tires and chromed finish cast-aluminum wheels set the right mood for an intense driving experience.

On the road, the SS truck was reassuringly responsive, nimble and fun to drive. Despite the exterior look, it was not a brutish vehicle to deal with at speed. The Silverado SS was equipped with the Z60 high-performance suspension with lowered ride height.

Inside the huge cabin area, first-rate ergonomics were combined with user-friendly displays, controls and switchgear. The instrument panel featured unique white-faced analog gauges with black lettering.

The front bucket seats were like comfortable easy chairs. Cupholders and power points abounded in this large space. The rear bench seat was comfortable enough for two adults. Seat-mounted belts and grab handles also worked together to facilitate access to the rear seat. The rear seat bottom folded up to provide a securable cargo area for sensitive items and equipment.

And, by the way, if you like the Silverado but may not be a fan specifically of the SS version, don't worry. As Brian Douglas of Autoeditor.com explained, since, over the last few years, Chevy offers the Silverado in more than 40 varieties of engine/cab/bed/drive system, you can virtually custom build your truck from the ground up. n
