The weekend is upon us, and that means so are lots of art openings and ongoing shows to check out. Here are this week's top five picks.

"Receptacle" exhibition of 13 Somali-American artists hosts special events

This ambitious exhibition organized by the Somaal House of Art and curator/artist Mohamud Mumin hosts three events this weekend: a lecture, live painting session, and moderated panel discussion. These are companions to the ongoing exhibition, which continues in three locations at the Chase House Community Room (1530 S. 6th St., 2nd floor, Mpls.), Masjid Dar Al-Hijrah/ICSA (504 Cedar Av. S., Mpls.) and Masjid Shaafici Cultural Center (400 Cedar Av. S., Mpls.) through Aug. 5.

Friday, July 14, 2017 / 6–8pm

Abdi Roble, documentary photographer and community archivist, will present a lecture on his ongoing archival experience and facilitate image capture via scanning for the audience throughout the evening in collaboration with Immigration History Research Center Archives, University of Minnesota Libraries and the Minnesota Digital Library.

Painter Mohamed Hersi will bring his studio out into the open to finish his last piece for the exhibition.

Science-fiction-y mischief and geekery meet once again in Geek Belly Dance at the Bryant Lake Bowl at 10 p.m. (doors at 9:30 p.m.) in this week's Science Fiction Double Theate. What is Geek Slink? They describe themselves as a "belly dance fusion experience combining geekery, body positivity and theatricality." Prepare thyself for some sword dancing, too!

Monster Rally Drawing

Saturday, July 15

6 – 8 p.m.

Midway Contemporary Art (527 Southeast 2nd Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55414)

This event guarantees to be artier than a monster truck rally. For two hours, artists do live drawing in three one-hour rounds. After the drawing is completed, it's quickly sold for a first come, first serve price of $35. Whether or not you're in the mood to buy, it's fun to watch the work come into being at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. There's also a cash bar and BBQ. All proceeds benefit Midway Contemporary, ensuring that its doors stay wide open!
