3M Co. officially opened its new 3M Design Center at its Maplewood headquarters, officials said Thursday.

The new three-story center, for which costs were not disclosed, will showcase libraries of design ideas and products and serve as a creative hub for 3M designers, architects, product developers and customers.

Construction of the center began in August 2015. Now finished, it is four times larger than 3M's old space and ready to spur innovative and fashionable product ideas.

"3M Design is at the forefront of creating customer-driven experiences," said Eric Quint, 3M vice president and chief design officer. "The new studio reflects our culture of spontaneous collaboration, creativity and translation of insightful solutions that positively impact the world. We will continue to inspire and grow our design talent across all 3M businesses, further elevating 3M as a recognized leader in design."

The building's layout includes private meeting areas and communal spaces that foster collaboration. The goal is to "enable uninhibited creative possibilities" for 3M businesses and customers, while also focusing on smart and sustainable design, Quint said. 3M has about 150 designers spread around the world.

The center was designed to be "eco-friendly" and boasts energy-efficient climate control, lighting systems and recycled materials. It also features 3M's line of architectural lighting, 3M's high grade DI-NOC wall and surface coverings and various other 3M finishes.
