Taking photos of swooping Chimney Swifts late Thursday morning I caught this Cooper's Hawk as it flew past with a frog in its talons. The sun was behind the bird, so detail could be better. You easily can see, however, the definitive shape of this accipiter -- the short, wide wings and the long, narrow tail. Both help this bird maneuver in the tight confines of wooded areas, where it often hunts, allowing it to make the necessary quick, sharp turns as it follows prey.
