TOP MLB FREE AGENTS
STARTING PITCHERS
Yu Darvish (31 years old on Opening Day): Despite his World Series woes with the Dodgers, he is the top starter available.
Jake Arrieta (32): Cubs standout has shown some signs of aging but still will be coveted.
Alex Cobb (30): Had prove-it season with Rays entering free agency, will get big payday.
Jason Vargas (35): An All-Star for the Royals in 2017, he struggled in the second half; age is a concern.
Lance Lynn (31): Came off Tommy John elbow surgery with a decent season (3.43 ERA).
RELIEF PITCHERS
Wade Davis (32): The top reliever available, he had 32 saves for Cubs. Likely to get more than $15 million per season.
Greg Holland (32): Rebounded from Tommy John surgery to excel as a closer for the Rockies.
Addison Reed (29): Righthander has been a closer and a setup man; his relative youth is a plus.
Brandon Morrow (33): Reliever has a history of injuries, and started 2017 in the minors before starring with Dodgers.
Bryan Shaw (29): Appeared in an MLB-high 79 games as a setup man for Cleveland last season, with a 3.52 ERA.
Anthony Swarzak (32): Former Twin had a great 2017 season with White Sox and Brewers (2.33 ERA in 70 appearances).
CATCHER
Jonathan Lucroy (32): Excellent hitter for a catcher, likely to get big money, short-term deal.
INFIELDERS
Eric Hosmer (28): First baseman is a proven middle-of-the-lineup bat with strong leadership skills.
Zack Cozart (32): Career year at the plate and strong defensive shortstop who can play other positions.
Mike Moustakas (29): Like Hosmer, he could return to the Royals. Had 38 home runs and is dependable at third base.
Logan Morrison (30): After his 38-home run season with the Rays, the first baseman will be attractive to teams needing power.
Yonder Alonso (31): First baseman had a career year — 28 home runs with A's and Mariners.
Carlos Santana (32): A Gold Glove finalist at first base, the switch hitter also has a potent bat.
Eduardo Nunez (31): An All-Star for the Twins in 2016, he will be a valuable utility man for probably a bargain price.
Todd Frazier (32): Good-fielding third baseman and a powerful hitter, but his batting average is too low for a big contract.
OUTFIELDERS
J.D. Martinez (30): Dynamite finish after being traded from Detroit to Arizona in July.
Lorenzo Cain (32): Speed, power and a .300 hitter. The Royals likely will lose him, probably to an NL team.
Jay Bruce (31): Joined Cleveland for the stretch run. His powerful lefthanded bat makes him valuable.
Carlos Gonzalez (32): Can he put up power numbers away from Coors Field? That's a key question.
