Major U.S. airlines have turned to fuel surcharges to pass along to passengers some of the burden they face from the high cost of jet fuel. Airlines usually march lockstep in fare increases. If one carrier doesn't go along, the others can lose their competitive edge.

Industry fuel surcharges in the past three months:

Nov. 10: $10.

Dec. 23: $10 for $20 total.

Jan. 11: $30 for $50 total; since rescinded.

Jan. 18: $20 for $40 total; pending.
