Minnesota Opera has swapped out the lead role for this Saturday's opening of Puccini's "Tosca," one of the most demanding roles in the repertoire.
The company announced Monday that Csilla Boross had withdrawn from the production "for personal reasons" and will be replaced by Kelly Kaduce.
A spokesman would not elaborate on Boross' decision, saying that "we are choosing to respect her privacy on the matter."
Boross is a Hungarian soprano who had sung the role with the Hungarian State Opera in the 2014-15 season. It's highly unusual for a performer in such a key role to drop out less than one week before opening.
Kaduce has twice sung the lead role in Minnesota productions of "Rusalka," most recently in January. Fortunately for the company, she was available for this role. She sang "Tosca" for one public performance and several school performances with the Houston Grand Opera in November.
She played the lead role in "Manon Lescaut" with the Minnesota Opera in 2013, so she is versed in Puccini's work. Kaduce — a Minnesota native who graduated from St. Olaf College — will originate the role of Wendy Torrance in the opera's world premiere of "The Shining" in May.
