A company with an open-pit taconite mine near Babbitt , Minn., was fined $26,087 for pumping tainted water from the mine into surface water, according to a report released Tuesday by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Northshore Mining Co. violated its water quality permit at its Peter Mitchell mine. The most frequent violations were for improper pH levels. Other violations related to the amount of suspended solids and un-ionized ammonia in the water. The company agreed to install equipment to adjust pH levels and develop plans to control other water pollutants. The violations covered by the report took place between October 2009 and March 2011. The company has since corrected one of the violations, according to the MPCA. Read the full report here.
