For the uninitiated, the US Air Guitar Championships are legitimate mock-rock theater, and a surprisingly big deal. Twenty-plus regional victors will vie for the national prize, one that will send an air-shredder to Finland to compete in the world championship. There are strict rules (60-second clips, no guitars) and scoring. Contestants are graded on technical merit (does it look right?), stage presence (is the crowd rocking?) and "airness" -- an undefinable, transcendent blurring of air vs. real. Think you've got it? Topping local rocker babe Cami "Airosol" Phillippi -- a three-time regional champ and USAG hall of famer -- will require serious faux chops.
