Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau said Wednesday she'll release the results of an investigation into a fatal motorcycle accident involving a police vehicle en route to the house where police officers shot and killed Terrance Franklin on May 10.
Harteau will hold the news conference at 10 a.m. Thursday at City Hall.
Franklin's deadly fight with officers followed a dramatic 90-minute chase through a crowded residential neighborhood during which he eluded officers who swarmed the area.
A few blocks away, motorcyclist Ivan Romero Olivares, 24, died in a crash with a police vehicle that had gone through a red light at 26th Street and Blaisdell Avenue S. as it headed to the scene. Romero's girlfriend, who was riding on the back, was injured.
Romero's motorcycle hit the rear quarter panel of the police sport-utility vehicle driven by officer Joshua Young, according to the department. It's unclear how fast the SUV was traveling seconds before the collision, how fast Romero was traveling, and whether any other vehicles blocked the drivers' views.
The police vehicle had its lights and siren activated at the time of the collision, which occurred about 30 minutes after Franklin was shot.
Harteau asked the State Patrol to investigate the collision; the agency completed its accident reconstruction report in September.
