Regarding Ken Herman's erroneous position that figure skating is not a sport ("Beautiful -- but it's not a sport," Feb. 17), in my opinion, an activity is a sport if it possesses two of the three following characteristics: extreme physical exertion; fast and prolonged movement of the body, and hitting or throwing an object. Baseball, hockey, soccer and football are great examples of sports. Skiing is a sport because it meets two out of three of the requirements. Golf is not a sport -- it's an activity. Let's be real -- you can play golf on crutches and get a good tan while doing it. Figure skating is absolutely a sport. It requires extreme physical exertion, and the participants move very fast. You can't participate in figure skating unless you're strong, fast-moving and have a high level of endurance. So put away the clubs, grab some skates and be an athlete. JOE TAMBURINO, WEST ST. PAUL
