Gulls can often be seen at this time of year following tractors as farmers prepare fields for planting. The birds are looking for grubs and worms. These Franklin's Gulls recently were seen near Sand Lake National
Wildlife Refuge. They nest will nest there when the water level of the Sand River is appropriate. On a good year, as many as 15,000 gulls will spend spring and summer on or near the refuge. This flock, most of it unseen here, numbered around 1,000 birds.
