I haven't seen our neighborhood Sandhill Crane family -- adults and two juveniles -- for about three weeks. They are, I hope, back in the cattails somewhere. Friday, though, on a visit to Crex Meadows Wildlife Area just north of Grantsburg, Wis., several crane families were seen. The juvenile here is the lighter colored bird. The young birds are only slightly smaller than the adults now. They should be in the refuge until late October or early November, when they begin migration to Texas for the winter.
