Overrated

The theatrical release of "When You're Strange: A Film About the Doors," which will also premiere on PBS on May 12, reignites my charge that Jim Morrison's band is the most overhyped, ridiculous institution in rock history. If "Love Her Madly" is a great American poem, then "Hickory Dickory Dock" should have won a Nobel Prize. Morrison may have been a spectacle onstage, but then so is that nearly naked guy who prances through Times Square.

Underrated

The next time barroom conversation drifts to the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones rivalry, impress your friends by casting your vote for the Kinks, the most underappreciated troupe of the British Invasion. Ray Davies writes lyrics that Morrison couldn't imagine in his wildest dreams. He may not look as good with his shirt off, but as rock idols go, there are few who are as irresistible.
