Ryan Bingham won an Oscar and Grammy (above) for his work on "Crazy Heart" Associated Press photo In the past two weeks, the winners of the past two Oscars for best original song performed in concert in Minneapolis --- and neither sang his Oscar winning tune. If Ryan Bingham was taking his cue from Randy Newman, consider him in good company, though he certainly disappointed some fans Thursday at a packed Varsity Theater by not performing "The Weary Kind" from 2009's "Crazy Heart." Nonetheless, the 1 ¾-hour performance didn't disappoint. Bingham, who turns 30 this month, is a hardscrabble, raspy-voiced Texan who echoes Steve Earle, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. In fact, if the Boss had gone country instead of boardwalk rock/soul, he might have come out sounding a lot like Bingham and his three sidemen did Thursday. It was mostly passionate Americana with lyrics that aimed for the poetic but occasionally sounded a tad cliched. Bingham favored medium tempo, though he rocked out enough so the full house could get their yee-haws out. Highlights included the Band-like "Hard Times," the bluegrassy "Tell My Mother I Miss Her So," the quietly soulful "Hallelujah" and the brand-new "Hobo," which sounded like Dylan with a shot of adrenaline. Bingham's voice may be raspy but it resonated with piercing clarity. For an encore, Bingham mentioned how it he was going to perform in Madison, Wis., on Friday for "all the left wingers" and then he did a solo acoustic reading of Dylan's "The Times, They Are A-Changing," probably not realizing that, in 1959-60, the song's author lived a stone's throw away from very spot where Bingham was standing.
