Strong winds with gusts over 50 miles per hour will impact the mid-Atlanticregion Friday. The high wind conditions will knock down tree branches and causesome power outages.High wind conditions are typically experienced to the south or southwest of astorm where the jet stream is aligned with the surface flow. In this quadrantof the low pressure system, there is typically a substantial amount ofup-and-down motion which transports jet stream energy to the lower levels. Thisenergy comes down in a pulsing manner which is what causes the gusty nature ofthe surface winds.

The storm causing the high winds in the mid-Atlantic Friday will track along aline from Pittsburgh, Pa., to Portsmouth, N.H.
