1996
Congress passes, President Clinton signs "Defense of Marriage Act," which forbids federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages for the purpose of federal benefits such as Social Security.
1997
Minnesota Legislature passes "Defense of Marriage" bill, defining marriage as between a man and a woman. It is signed by Gov. Arne Carlson.
2003
Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rules same-sex marriage is legal.
2004, 2005 AND 2006
Minnesota Legislature considers state constitutional amendment to be put on state ballot that would ban same-sex marriage. Each time it fails to get through Legislature.
2008
Connecticut Supreme Court rules in October that same sex-couples have right to wed.
California Supreme Court rules in May that same-sex marriage is legal, but in November, voters approve Proposition 8, which overturns ruling. Voters also approve bans on gay marriage in Florida and Arizona, bringing to 30 the number of states that have constitutional bans on same-sex marriage.
2009
