An impressive nine-point road victory over Lakeville North last Friday night put the Bloomington Kennedy girls' basketball team alone at the top in the South Suburban Conference standings. That's an unfamiliar place for most teams -- the loss was the Panthers' first in 37 games. But there was little celebration on the Eagles' part at the final buzzer.
"It's not March," said sophomore Tonoia Wade, who had a game-high 18 points, 15 on three-pointers. "Our expectation here was to win. But it will mean a lot more down the road." Kennedy has the horses to be one of the teams in the mix as tournament season revs up at the end of next month. Wade is one of five Eagles' players averaging more than 10 points per game for a team that averages north of 70 points per game.
"Our whole starting lineup is our leading scorer," Wade said.
Kennedy continues conference play Friday at Rosemount.
Besse picks the BadgersBenilde-St. Margaret's junior right winger Grant Besse has made a verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team. Besse scored five points in a 7-0 rout over St. Louis Park on Saturday night, giving him 133 career points (fourth all-time at BSM). The 5-10, 175-pounder has not missed a game in three years on varsity.
He is the second player to commit recently. Linemate Dan Labosky, also a junior, has verbally committed to Colorado College. Under NCAA rules, players cannot sign letters of intent until their senior year.
Hebert picks Northern IowaOsseo quarterback DJ Hebert is headed to Northern Iowa on a football scholarship, Orioles coach Derrin Lamker said Monday.
Hebert passed for 796 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall while also running for 564 yards and eight touchdowns.
McDonald back on the marketAndre McDonald told the website GopherHole.com last weekend that he is back in the recruiting mix. The Hopkins senior originally committed to Minnesota before choosing Vanderbilt. However, receivers coach Chris Beatty took a job at Illinois, leading McDonald to reconsider. He told Gopher Hole that he plans to look at Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and UCLA.
Janning tops 3,000 pointsWatertown-Mayer senior Marissa Janning went over the 3,000-point mark in her career with a 32-point effort in a victory over LeSueur-Henderson on Friday.
