Ramsey County spent $247 million buying and renovating the historic Union Depot in downtown St. Paul. The project was completed in 2012 but it's taken five years to rent out all the commercial space in the building. County officials say they drawing folks to the space - more than 1 million last year - with holiday markets, a new indoor farmers market, free weekly yoga and train aficionado events. Amtrak's Empire builder stops there twice a day; the Green Line ends there and there's a smattering of other transit uses. The building is not self-sufficient or a hotbed of activity, but county folks say they are in it for the long-term. They've preserved a historic landmark in the heart of downtown and are keeping it open to the public.
