Jones, Gadu, Miller, Vasudevan
The four choreographers presenting work at the Southern Theater this weekend couldn't be more different stylistically, but their pairing somehow makes sense. There's Butoh performer Gadu; tap-dance virtuoso Kaleena Miller, who is planning a piece inspired by dance duos of a bygone era; Justin Jones, who's creating a piece that proposes a new equalization of rehearsal and performance, and the always surprising and thought-provoking Pramila Vasudevan, who in collaboration with Dustin Maxwell brings her unique work that's layered with a contemporary Indian dance aesthetic. Each of these artists is constantly reinventing and challenging their very different forms of dance. Together, they should make a lively evening full of new material.
