Two people were dead after a driver impaired by alcohol crashed into their car Saturday night in Brooklyn Center, according to the State Patrol.
And the driver and his impaired passenger tried to flee after the crash, on 57th Avenue N. at Hwy. 100, the patrol said, adding that witnesses kept the driver from leaving.
Killed at the scene were a 21-year-old Minneapolis woman and a 22-year-old Bloomington man in a 1996 Geo Prizm, the State Patrol said early on Sunday. Their names were to be released later Sunday. (The patrol initially said both victims were men.)
The patrol gave these details about the crash, reported about 10:20 p.m.:
The Prizm exited from northbound Hwy. 100 when a 2005 Toyota Camry going east on 57th Avenue ran a stop sign and T-boned the other car.
Alcohol was detected on both people in the Camry, a 21-year-old Minneapolis man and a 28-year-old Brooklyn Center man, the patrol said.
Initial reports had at least one car on fire while people were still inside it.
The State Patrol continued to investigate Sunday, along with Brooklyn Center and Bloomington police and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
