Pond life through ice

Fort Snelling State Park

Aquatic insects are everywhere during spring, summer and fall, but where are they in the winter? Dress for warmth and come learn how aquatic insects survive the cold when lakes are frozen over. Meet at the visitor center. (612-725-2724, mndnr.gov)

Winter Fest

Douglas State Trail

Cap off a day of winter activities in Pine Island with a candlelight walk. Begin at the golf course and continue along the trail. Sponsored by the nonprofit Pine Island Image Committee. (507-356-4839, mndnr.gov)

St. Croix by candlelight

William O'Brien State Park

5-8 p.m. Saturday

Start at the visitor center, learn about winter constellations and make a constellation chart to take along on a walk. Then follow the flickering LED lights, looking for stars and listening for owls along the packed 2.5-mile trail. Finish back at the visitor center with hot apple cider and an opportunity to roast marshmallows. The event is organized by the Friends of William O'Brien State Park. (651-433-0500, mndnr.gov)

Ski lessons

French Regional Park

Skate basics, 9:30-11 a.m. Sunday; classic basics, noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday

In the skate session, learn efficient edging, gliding and control. Prior classic skiing experience recommended. Otherwise, a private lesson is encouraged. Cost is $25, or $41 with ski rental. This lesson is for ages 13 and older. Reference number 125052-02.

In the beginner classic ski lesson, learn balance, striding and gliding, stopping and starting. Lesson is meant for novice skiers and those wanting a review. Cost is $21, or $32 with ski rental. Reference number 125050-02. (threeriversparks.org)

Ice harvesting day

Richardson Nature Center

11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday

Head to Bloomington to learn about life before refrigerators. Meet ice harvesting historian Tim Graf and costumed intepreters from The Landing-Minnesota River Heritage Park. Cut blocks of ice with old-fashioned tools and do other ice-harvesting activities. (763-694-7676, threerivers­parks.org)
