• 48 million U.S. birders age 16 and older
• 50 is the age of average birder, who is most likely a woman with above-average income and education
• 55-plus is the age of most birders
• Whites are three times more likely to be birders than Hispanics, Asians or African-Americans
• People are more likely to watch birds in small cities and rural areas
• Montana has the highest proportion of residents who watch birds, at 40 percent. Maine, Vermont, Minnesota (33 percent) and Iowa are next.
