Vasa Church, one of the first Lutheran churches in Minnesota, the rural congregation is preparing for a Scandanavian midsummer festival complete with Swedish pancakes. At Redeemer Lutheran in north Minneapolis, summer means the church bike shop is humming, the health commons offers yoga and zumba, the kids' camp is in full swing, and young renters in its 26 apartments are mentoring neighbor kids and organizing with Black Lives Matter. The two churches reveal the transformation -- and challenges - of the Lutheran church as it marks its 500th anniversary this year.
