WHERE TO FIND GREEN MATTRESSES

Hennen Furniture: The stores in Alexandria, St. Cloud and Willmar sell the locally based Comfort Solutions mattress (formerly King Koil). The Natural Response mattress is about 95 percent latex with some oil-based foam.

Restwell: The Velvet Night line is 100 percent natural latex. It's about 10 percent cheaper than Room & Board's all-natural latex mattress, but Restwell's cover is 100 percent polyester. Go to www.restwellmattress.com for a $100-off coupon good at stores in Bloomington, Lakeville and St. Louis Park.

Room & Board: Its Natural Latex is one of the greenest mattresses around. The foam core is 100 percent natural latex, along with an organic wool and cotton cover. It is flippable, but one side is firmer than the other. For an extra $100, couples can split the mattress down the middle with a firm and a soft side. The Kevlar stitching is not natural, but no manufacturer has found an organic thread that meets fire retardant standards. Prices range from $1,399 to $2,299 for mattress only (no foundation). Money-back guarantee offered.

Slumberland and J.C. Penney: The Natural Care Latex mattress is marketed as green, but the mattress is made of 65 percent natural latex while the rest is a soy-enhanced foam that includes some petroleum-based products. Prices at Slumberland, which has more choices than Penneys, range from $1,099 (twin) to $2,699 (king). Get an additional $200 off through Saturday.

Twin Cities Green: The Uptown retailer (www. twincitiesgreen.com) offers the greenest, most versatile choices. The 100 percent natural latex mattresses by Savvy Rest range from $1,765 for a twin mattress/foundation to $3,375 for king. Each is made up of three latex layers on each half, so couples can customize firmness. Buyers choose a combination of soft, medium and firm densities for each layer; the zippered cover allows users to change layers. Cover can be removed for cleaning. Except for the cover's zipper, the mattress is entirely compostable.
