On the road again

Michael Wood, TV's most engaging tour guide, is back to tell us "The Story of China," a limited documentary series that opens with a look at the country's most storied ancestors, including Confucius. Ancient history can be a bit of chore, but Wood makes it an engaging trip with his enthusiasm and willingness to embrace local culture.

Lost at sea

Maybe it's my fond memories of watching "Gilligan's Island" reruns after school, but I continue to be tickled by "Wrecked," the stranded-on-a-desert-island comedy in which incompetence is more perilous than any Smog Monster. The second season opens with a visit from pirates who are not nearly as easygoing as the Harlem Globetrotters.

Queen bee

"Queen Sugar," created by the red-hot Ava DuVernay ("Selma") returns for a second season. Just as with last year, all the episodes are helmed by women directors. DuVernay's next big-screen project is "A Wrinkle in Time."
