Minneapolis police will be boosting patrols throughout the city over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, targeting drunken drivers and adding officers in trouble-prone areas of the city.

"We have several officers working DWI enforcement and additional footbeats in our violent crime 'hot spots,' " said Sgt. Catherine Michal, a police spokeswoman.

Special teams of police, sheriff's deputies and metro transit officers will begin patrols in north Minneapolis, responding specifically to shootings and weapons calls.

Officers will be assigned to monitor two memorial vigils for crime victims in north Minneapolis, Michal said. Additionally, police will assign extra officers to patrol targeted areas of downtown.
