Details: After many years of constructing new buildings for its clients around the country, M.A. Mortenson Co. this year is turning its attention to its own campus along Hwy. 55 in Golden Valley.

Citing its growing workforce, the construction and real estate development firm laid the regulatory groundwork for a bigger parking ramp and a new office building at its Meadow Lane site near Theodore Wirth Park. In June it won City Council approval for amendments to the planned unit development rules governing the campus.

The first phase, set to get underway late this summer, includes demolishing a two-level parking ramp for a four-story, 1,096-vehicle facility on the same footprint.

That is to be followed by construction of a new office building on a currently vacant spot in site's the northeast corner, joining three other buildings. The new six-story structure would be 98,000 square feet. Its design by RSP Architects is meant to complement the area's established vernacular of precast concrete, "weathering" steel and glass.

Mortenson Senior Vice President Ken Sorenson told the council the timing of the new building depends on how quickly the company adds employees. A potential third phase envisions a two-story addition to the current southernmost building.
