Two people injured when a single-engine plane crashed Saturday in Rosemount have been identified as Brian West of Miami and Courtney Leer of Lakeville.

Leer, a passenger in the plane, is in serious condition at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Her uncle Brian Doyle of Lakeville, who owns the plane, said she is expected to recover.

West, who was the pilot, walked away from the crash with minor injuries.

The 1946 Piper J3 Cub went down about 3:45 p.m. Saturday shortly after takeoff at Jensen Airfield.

Doyle said West, 35, and Leer, 20, were taking off for a recreational flight when the plane lost some power. West turned and landed the plane in a cornfield near the runway.

"Brian is a good pilot," he said. "He got it on the ground the best way he could."

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.
