A federal grand jury on Tuesday indicted a Redby, Minn., couple, in the slaying of a 21-year-old man found dead on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.

Kelly James Maxwell, 27, and Natalie Renee Delores Ann Smith, 21, are charged in U.S. District Court with one count of second-degree murder.

They are accused of killing Curtis Leslie Charles Heinonen, whose body was found Oct. 1 under some logs in a yard in Renby.

Some of Heinonen's clothing was found in Smith's yard, about two blocks away from the body, according to the criminal complaint.

When asked by Red Lake police whether she knew what happened to Heinonen, Smith said she and Maxwell "both stomped him up," the complaint said. Smith also told police that Heinonen's jacket and a rag used to wipe blood from Maxwell's boots were in her home, according to the complaint.

Interviewed later by Red Lake police and the FBI, Maxwell said that he had kicked Heinonen and buried him under some logs, the complaint added.

A federal magistrate judge has ordered a psychological evaluation of Maxwell, according to federal court records.
