The Daytona Beach, Fla., Police Department said Monday that the death of a 16-year-old boy from Plymouth who fell Sunday from a balcony was an accident.
Barret Forst Ugland, a sophomore at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School in Plymouth, died a day after arriving in Florida for spring vacation with his family.
"It was just a tragic accident," said Daytona Beach police investigator Jimmie Flynt.
"We are closing the case."
Police said Ugland died after falling 24 stories from a hotel balcony, apparently after standing on a stack of chairs on the balcony trying to see the sun rise about 7 a.m. Sunday.
"That's kind of what I suspected, that's kind of what makes the most sense," said Brian Anderson, a church friend of Ugland.
The Robbinsdale School District's spring break began Monday, but students who knew Ugland were planning a brief memorial gathering at the school the first morning that they return.
Ugland was a member of the school's football team, and students are planning to sign a football and present it to his parents, according to a Facebook memorial page.
Other students want to observe a Barret Ugland Day by making shirts in memory of the teenager and wearing them at school.
