Huey was born in Fargo and is a graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb. She received a graduate degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois in Springfield. With her husband, Paul Walsh, she raised two sons, both born in Washington, D.C., and adopted as infants. They are both African American and have immeasurably enriched their lives. She also have a step daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter.
